TMA elected Temple internist Andrew “Jimmy” Widmer, MD, as the Young Physician Section representative to the TMA Board of Trustees in May 2024. Dr. Widmer will serve a 2-year term on the board.
“Physician advocacy is essential to delivering quality care to our patients, and I sought to represent the TMA Young Physician Section on the board to bolster the advocacy of our young physicians and be their voice,” Dr. Widmer said.
The Young Physician Section comprises physicians under the age of 40 or in their first eight years of medical practice.
He began his TMA involvement in the Medical Student Section and then the Resident and Fellow Section. He is an alumnus of the TMA Leadership College which develops young physicians’ leadership skills.
A recent member of TMA’s Council on Legislation, Dr. Widmer also chaired TEXPAC, the association’s political action committee. He practiced physician advocacy during the 2023 session of the Texas Legislature when he testified on behalf of medicine and patient care in several committee hearings.
Dr. Widmer is a former president of the Bell County Medical Society. He is a member of the Clinic Staff Organization at Baylor Scott & White in Temple, where he also serves as a core faculty member for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Widmer also is an assistant professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Temple.
