Eight Houston/Galveston physicians and a medical student will have the opportunity to influence health care policy at the state and national level. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) recently selected the physicians for leadership positions; five members were elected to represent Texas doctors on the national level as delegates to the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates, and four were selected to serve on the TMA ethical policymaking body, the Board of Councilors.
Ana Leech, MD, a Houston hospice and palliative care physician for over 14 years, was reconfirmed as a vice councilor.
Steven Petak, MD, a Houston endocrinologist with 39 years of experience, was reconfirmed as a councilor.
Sherif Zaafran, MD, a Houston anesthesiologist in practice for 24 years, was reelected as an AMA alternate delegate in the AMA House of Delegates.
Diana Fite, MD, a Magnolia emergency medicine physician for 42 years, was reelected as an AMA delegate.
Elizabeth Torres, MD, a Sugar Land internal medicine specialist for 39 years, was elected as an AMA delegate.
Additionally, Matthew McGlennon, DO, a Houston internal medicine resident-in-training, was elected as the Resident and Fellow Section alternate delegate to AMA.
The physicians are members of the Harris County Medical Society.
Other Houston/Galveston area physicians include:
David Nickeson, MD, a Seabrook physician who specializes in pulmonary diseases, internal medicine, and critical care medicine, was reconfirmed as a councilor. He has practiced for over 41 years.
Steven Wolf, MD, a Galveston general and trauma surgeon for 27 years, was reconfirmed as a vice councilor.
Both physicians are members of the Galveston County Medical Society.
Finally, Mr. Grayson Jackson, a student at The University of Texas Medical Branch John Sealy School of Medicine, was elected as the TMA Medical Student Section alternate delegate to AMA. He is a member of the Galveston County Medical Society.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
