TonyAventaMD 190x190 P1350168Austin internist Tony R. Aventa, MD, was elected Saturday to the Texas Medical Association (TMA) Board of Trustees, the association’s governing body. TMA’s House of Delegates policymaking body elected Dr. Aventa during TexMed, the association’s annual conference, held this year in Fort Worth.

“I consider it an honor to be elected to this role,” said Dr. Aventa. “One of my goals is to help our physicians maintain their close patient-physician relationship along with their practice independence if that’s their choice.”

Dr. Aventa co-chairs TMA’s Ad Hoc Committee on Independent Physician Practice. He also chairs the Travis County Medical Society Delegation to the TMA House of Delegates and is a member of TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee.

“I’ve spent countless hours advocating for patients and physicians both at TMA and at the state Capitol during legislative sessions,” Dr. Aventa said. The physician who’s practiced 23 years said he is motivated to protect Texas’ medical liability reform, support patients’ health care choices, and ensure their access to safe and timely treatments.

Dr. Aventa has held several leadership roles in the Travis County Medical Society, including serving as president in 2019 and as chair of its Medical Legislation Committee in 2011-12.

He earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and became board certified while serving as a major in the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio.

Dr. Aventa is passionate about providing care to people who are underserved and has traveled to Guyana and Belize on humanitarian mission trips to do so.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
