Little Elm internist John G. Flores, MD, was reelected vice speaker of the Texas Medical Association (TMA) House of Delegates, the association’s policymaking body. The house elected Dr. Flores during TexMed, TMA’s annual conference, held in Fort Worth this year.
“I want to thank the TMA House of Delegates for its continuing confidence in my leadership,” Dr. Flores said. “Serving as vice speaker is an awesome experience that brings new challenges every day.”
The House of Delegates elects TMA officers and representatives to the American Medical Association (AMA), and debates and sets TMA policy.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Flores has worked with Speaker Brad Holland, MD, to help house members adapt to the changing means of communication as the normally in-person meetings shifted to virtual, then back to ballroom gatherings. He said adaptation and efficiency will be a challenge this year as well. For example, TMA accepted online testimonial comments on resolutions, although the debate will happen in person.
Dr. Flores believes his biggest accomplishment this past year as vice speaker has been to ensure the House of Delegates meeting runs smoothly and efficiently. “We have had many items of business to tackle and worked to provide members an open and welcoming meeting where everyone can have their voice heard,” he said.
Dr. Flores has held multiple TMA leadership positions, including chair of both the Council on Socioeconomics and the Council on Health Service Organizations. He also serves as a TMA alternate delegate to AMA and is secretary of the AMA Organized Medical Staff Section’s Governing Council. He also is a former president of the Denton County Medical Society.
Board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Flores has practiced for more than 25 years. In 1997, he opened an internal medicine clinic in Little Elm, where his wife, Jill Ellen Wolf, MD – also an internist – joined him in 2003.
Dr. Flores earned his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School. He and his wife have been married 20 years, and they have four sons.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
