S.Mathis_190Galveston family physician Samuel E. Mathis, MD, has been elected to the Texas Medical Association (TMA) Board of Trustees to represent TMA’s Young Physician Section (TMA-YPS). TMA’s House of Delegates policymaking body elected Dr. Mathis during TexMed, the association’s annual conference, in Houston. TMA-YPS members are physicians in their first eight years of medical practice.

“I've been involved with TMA since medical school and throughout residency. Being elected to the Board of Trustees as a young physician is an honor and speaks to the trust of the TMA membership in me to fulfill this role,” said Dr. Mathis.

Dr. Mathis, a TMA member for 12 years, has served as a member of the TMA Council on Constitution and Bylaws since 2017. He previously served as the resident physician member on the TMA Board of Councilors – the association’s ethical policymaking body – and most recently completed his term as chair of the YPS. For more than seven years, Dr. Mathis has served on reference committees and as a delegate or alternate delegate to the TMA  House of Delegates, helping form TMA policy.

He also has represented Texas resident physicians and TMA’s YPS in the American Medical Association (AMA) Resident and Fellow, and Young Physicians sections. Dr. Mathis has served in the AMA House of Delegates, both as a resident alternate delegate and as a delegate for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

Within his specialty, Dr. Mathis serves as the new physician member on the AAFP Board of Directors.

He also is president of the Galveston County Medical Society, having previously served as the local chapter’s vice president and secretary.

Dr. Mathis is an assistant professor of family medicine in The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine’s (UTMB’s) Department of Family Medicine.

He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Baylor University in Waco and a doctor of medicine from UTMB. He completed his residency training with the Memorial Hermann Health System’s Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in Sugar Land. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 56,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
