Houston otolaryngologist and facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Bradford S. Patt, MD, has been elected to the Texas Medical Association (TMA) Board of Trustees. TMA’s House of Delegates elected Dr. Patt during TexMed, the association’s annual conference, held in Houston this year.
“I will be honored to serve the physicians of Texas at the highest level on the Board of Trustees of TMA,” said Dr. Patt. “It is so important that TMA speaks as a unified voice for our physicians and continues to advocate on the many issues physicians face in their practices, to better care for our patients.”
Dr. Patt said he strives to defend the patient-physician relationship, aiming to prevent outside interference with it. To achieve this, he said he works to elect public officials who understand the needs of physicians in their efforts to provide sound patient care. Dr. Patt joined TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee, and served the organization as chair from 2019 to 2021. During this time, he also was a consultant to the TMA Council on Legislation.
Dr. Patt also said he works to protect medical liability reform enacted in Texas in 2003. He served on the TMA Professional Liability Committee from 2009 to 2014 and said he has described the importance of the liability laws to newly elected state legislators over the years.
In his new role, Dr. Patt said he wants to increase TMA membership and strengthen the voice of organized medicine in Texas. He also said he hopes to encourage lawmakers to support medicine-friendly issues, including ensuring that health professionals who are not physicians are not allowed to practice medicine without a medical license, and adopting health insurance improvements. He also advocates for increased funding for graduate medical education to train more young physicians in the state.
Dr. Patt served as president of the Harris County Medical Society in 2015. He also served as chair of the Harris County Medical Society delegation to the TMA House of Delegates in 2019.
Dr. Patt earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his residency at the UT Southwestern Medical School and a fellowship in facial plastic surgery at the University of Illinois.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 56,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
